Learn the basics of relief printmaking with an introduction to woodcut, and print your very own works on paper. This versatile and accessible technique can be applied to the creation of artist’s books, textile design, poster design and limited edition prints.
This class will cover carving out your image from a Japanese shina plywood block, cutting techniques, safety, correct inking of a plate and hand printing. You will also be advised on how to hand colour your prints and options for printing papers.
You will take home a striking set of your own prints, your wood block, full instructions and resource pdfs so you have the ability to print at home using this technique!
- This workshop uses oil-based inks that can be difficult to remove from clothing. Remember to bring an apon or wear a studio-friendly outfit!
- If desired, bring a photo or sketch to trace on to your block - but you are welcome to freehand a new piece or take inspiration from the surroundings! We'll be working with 15 x 11.25 cm shina plywood, which you can work with full-size or cut in half. Working with both sides, that lets you make 2-4 images whether all at once with us or continuing at home.
Morning tea provided (please let us know if you have any dietary requirements such as gluten- or dairy-free); tea and coffee available throughout.
$100 per person.
